Hello, Working Girls: Vicky and Nikoleta of Best Dressed Boutique

Hello, Working Girls: Vicki and Nickoleta of Best Dressed
Meet Vicky and Nikoleta, two fashion-forward Boston-based entrepreneurs and owners of Best Dressed! Best Dressed is a boutique that specializes in renting out coveted, high-end designer brands to their clients. Learn more about the launch of Best Dressed below, and how the ladies keep their priorities in order during a busy workweek.

Q: Prior to setting up shop with Best Dressed, what was your experience in the fashion industry and other entrepreneurial endeavors?

Nikoleta: Growing up, we dressed to impress for every occasion. Our love of dressing up stayed with us throughout our teenage years, during which we both won “Best Dressed” in high school (hence the name). I’ve worked in the fashion industry for the past 10 years, in every corner of retail – merchandising, buying, and styling. I’ve learned so much from each job and worked with amazing people that inspired me to open my own store.

Vicky: My love for fashion grew over the 7 years I spent in the industry. Nik and I always wanted to open our own business in the fashion industry, and the timing and concept of Best Dressed seemed like a perfect fit for us, so we went for it!

Q: What was your inspiration behind opening Best Dressed, and what does it contribute to Boston’s shopping scene?

Nikoleta: The inspiration really came from a group text, where a friend was upset about an online rental that didn’t work out for her. We are different in that every woman that comes to our store gets a personal stylist. We want them to feel like they just walked into their fashionable friend’s closet and were able to chose anything that they felt great in. And who wouldn’t love that?

Vicky: We wanted to give women a less-stressful, affordable option for finding a dress for the many events that fill their social calendars. We pride ourselves on offering a variety of styles and designers – and at a fraction of the price without the obligation to wear it again. We are the first brick-and-mortar dress rental store in Boston, so it was really exciting to bring this type of service to the city.

Q: What does a typical day look like for the owners of Best Dressed? Conference calls, ordering new merchandise, scouting new trends at trade shows?

Nikoleta: I always start my day with lemon water and try to get a workout in because it helps clear my head.  Vicky usually sends me a motivational quote to kickstart the day, which is always motivates me to push harder towards my goals. I’m always on the hunt for new merchandise – in fact, much of the ‘downtime’ during the day is spent online shopping, researching new designers and placing orders for fun accessories that complete each look. Because I’m in the store full-time, my day is always broken up with clients coming in, which is my favorite part! Vicky and I are constantly in touch, keeping each other updated to ensure our to do lists are accomplished and we’re making progress towards our ‘bigger picture’ goals.

Vicky: Aside from finding a fun quote to send to my sister in the morning over a cup of green tea, the reality is that no day is ever really the same. That’s one of the fun things about owning a business! I’m an IT Project Manager at an amazing Ad agency in Boston so most of my time spent on Best Dressed is during my lunch break, at night and during the weekends. That time is spent discussing, approving and purchasing new inventory, assisting with web operations, and executing on marketing and social media strategy. It took a while, but I think I finally found a good balance between the two careers.

Q: For fellow women seeking to own their own boutique or storefront, what would you say are the 3 necessary qualities for success?

  1. Work hard. Nothing comes easy and you have to go into each day prepared to work for it.
  2. Dream big. The best way to stay motivated is to have bigger dreams and goals you want to achieve. Knowing you aren’t there yet pushes you to keep going.
  3. Don’t be afraid to fail. Once you get over the fear, you can really push yourself to do things you didn’t think you could before.

Vicky: Selecting just 3 is tough! But I would have to say:

  1. Be a risk taker. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and be willing to do what others aren’t.
  2. Prioritize your customers. Really listen to them for valuable feedback and always deliver more than is expected.
  3. Believe in yourself and the success of your business.. Don’t ever give up!Hello, Working Girls: Vicky and Nickoleta of Best Dressed Boutique

Q: Where do you hope to see Best Dressed within the next year, and how will you accomplish this?

Nikoleta & Vicky:  We really hope to open another store within the next year! Another goal of ours is to become more of a style resource for women. There is nothing we love more than making women feel confident, sexy, and beautiful. By curating a collection that our clients love and providing honest feedback, we hope to make Best Dressed the place to go for style advice in Boston.
